Alex Ward, director of design for Criterion, spilled some beans on upcoming Burnout series for next gen consoles. Mr. Ward recently told Gamepro that Burn Out 5 (Working title) feature seamless racing world instead of individual racing circuits. In other words, no loading in to a specific circuit.

In addition to seamless racing world, Burn Out 5 will fully utilize HDMI 1080p for those with high definition TV that supports that feature. The PS3’s Sixaxis Controller will provide additional control options the Xbox 360 doesn’t have. Plus, the PS3’s advanced processing capabilities make it particularly suited for the physics intensive crashes that are going to be taking place.

Burnout Dominator

For the unitiated, the Burnout series of racing games tends towards the action side of things- slamming opponents into each other and living dangerously earns rather than loses you points. But Dominator is different from its predecessor, Revenge.

The first major difference is the boost system. This is a welcome return of the Burnout mechanism from a previous era of Burnout games.

Your boost bar is always at its maximum length- taking an opponent down does not extend it and crashing doesn’t take away part of it. This means you don’t need to spend the first part of each race extending your boost bar by smashing opponents into walls- allowing you to concentrate on racing instead.

Dominator is an enjoyable game but may be turning stale. This may be really a filler release while we look out for teh next generation of Burnout.

Presently available for PSP and PS2.
