Looking at the Playstation 3

The Playstation 3 is a gaming system that has taken the world by storm as evidenced by its high volume sales. Quite frankly, there is no way the system would be able to maintain such high sales figures if it did not offer a high quality product. Yes, there could be significant market stimulation present by way of a solid advertising campaign, but if the product that was ultimately being sold was without merit, sales would slump as soon as the negative traits of the product became known to the public. Considering the colossal sales figures of Sony’s Playstation 3, it is obvious that the gaming system is a top of the line system that provides a level of audio, video and strategy quality that has pleased millions of people all over the world. Yes, we have come a long way from Atari’s old 1976 “Pong” system.

The Psychology Employed With The Playstation 3
Part of the reason for the success of the gaming system is psychological. Now, that is not to say that the perceived qualities of the gaming system exist solely in the mind of the consumer. All one has to do is look at the system and the top selling games to see that the Playstation 3 is a revolutionary form of home gaming entertainment that is miles ahead of its competitors. However, much of the financial success of the system derives from the fact that when the game debuted the volume of people who wanted to purchase the system greatly exceeded the number of units available. This made the Playstation 3 a rare commodity and such rarity made the system even more desirable to the public. As such, the units that were available for sale literally flew off retail shelves quicker than anyone could imagine.

Good, Better, Best
When it comes to the success of the Playstation 3, much of that success also derives from the fact that the consumers of the system believe it to be the best gaming system on the market. This is not an easy feat to achieve considering the fact that the Playstation 3 must compete with the Xbox as well as Nintendo systems. However, Playstation 3 has been able to deliver such a high quality product that it stimulated solid demand among gamers to the point that the Playstation 3 has won the hearts and minds of gaming aficionados to the point where Sony has a huge leg up on their competitors. As long as Sony is able to continue to deliver a top of the line product, it will continue to remain competitive and successful.

In an interesting interview with Australian Official Playstation Magazine, FF 13 director Motomu Toriyama reveals more details on highly anticipated upcoming Final Fantasy games for Playstation 3. Mr. Toriyama (No relations to Akira Toriyama?) confirms that the main character is indeed a female and her name is Lightning. He further comments that rest of the characters will be introduced chronologically as the release date draws near. When asked about the the game’s utilization of high definition format, he replied by saying that HD is one of the most crucial and important components of Final Fantasy 13 coupled with hint at possible online capability.

In my humble opinion, the name Lightning does not go with the main character. I despise game developers for using generic names for their characters, and Japanese developers are notorious for doing that! I.E Cloud from FF 7 or Vegeto and piccolo from DBZ. Moreover, online capability will have its limit as the game is very linear contrary to FF 11.
